Cooler Size and Performance Guide
Sizing, cold retention, ice ratio, pre-chilling, use scenarios, and cooler care.
Overview
Practical guidance
Cooler size and cold retention are driven by a handful of variables you can control: total volume, ice ratio, pre-chilling, and how often the lid opens. This guide walks through sizing, use-case fit, and the small habits that dramatically extend cold performance.
Sizing
Coolers are sized by total interior volume (liters or quarts). A rough rule: half the volume is ice, half is contents. Under-size and you run out of cold; over-size and you carry unused ice weight.
Ice-to-contents ratio
For extended trips, aim for a 2:1 ice-to-contents ratio by volume. Block ice lasts longer than cubed ice. Combining both — blocks on the bottom, cubes on top — balances cold density and packing flexibility.
Pre-chilling
A warm cooler consumes ice cooling itself down. Pre-chill the cooler for 6–12 hours with sacrificial ice, then drain and load with fresh ice and pre-chilled contents.
Wheeled vs non-wheeled
Wheels add convenience for larger sizes but add weight and reduce internal volume. Fixed handles are simpler and lighter for medium sizes carried by two people.
Drain plugs and dry ice
A quality drain plug speeds cleaning and lets you drain meltwater without opening the lid. Dry ice can extend performance but must be used with adequate ventilation — never seal a cooler completely with dry ice loaded.
Cleaning and storage
Rinse after each trip, clean with mild soap, dry fully, and store with the lid slightly open to prevent musty odors. Inspect the gasket for wear.

Cooler size guide
| Use case | Typical size |
|---|---|
| Personal day trip | 20–30 L / 20–30 qt |
| Weekend family / camping | 45–65 L / 45–65 qt |
| Multi-day fishing / marine | 75–125 L / 75–125 qt |
| Extended hunting / overlanding | 125 L+ / 125 qt+ (often wheeled) |
Sizes are indicative. Match the cooler to trip length, party size, and how often the lid will open.
